Contractor Induction
Local governments are committed to ensuring their contractors are kept safe while performing work, and also have a legal obligation to ensure that contractors are aware of the safety requirements of the local government.
Information for contractors
Each contracting company performing work must complete a general induction and they must pass the information on to any of their employees working on the local government contract. Once the contractor has completed the online induction for 1 council, this may be accepted by other councils, and the contractor would not need to repeat the process.
A secure database is compiled of the contractor’s details so that each local government can search to determine if their contractors have already completed the induction. Only authorized local government employees are able to access this database.
To make this process as easy as possible, an online induction has been developed. Please proceed to the Contractor Induction or view the Contractor Induction presentation.
For further details please view our Frequently Asked Questions for contractors. We also have available an Online Guide with step by step instructions to access the Contractor Induction.
Please note, the contractor must complete an on-site induction when they attend a specific worksite at each local government to be advised of any site specific hazards and procedures.
Information for local governments
Onsite induction
All contractors must be made aware of the need for general and site specific induction. This can be done through a letter to all regular contractors or by including these requirements in tender documents or purchase orders. A sample letter can be viewed here. This generic induction only needs to be completed once, however it is recommended that the local government contacts contractors annually to receive updated insurance details, and to advise contractors of any new local government or legislative requirements.
The online induction provides generic information about health and safety issues concerning contractors who work for local government. The local government must provide an "onsite induction" to provide details of specific hazards and procedures relating to the particular worksite. LGIS has developed a template for this induction, click here. As each local government is different, the contractor must have an appropriate onsite induction at each local government they attend.
Contractor induction database
1 or 2 people at the local government should be given authority to access the common database of contractors to local government who have completed the online induction. The database can be searched to determine which contractors have completed the induction. Insurance details such as expiry dates of policies can also be accessed.
Any contractor information that was included in the previous LGIS database has been migrated to the new database.
To gain access to the secure database the local government officer sends an email to kelvin.murphy@jlta.com.au who will grant a user name and password. Kelvin is one of the Senior OSH consultants at LGIS who has developed the induction system and tools. The officer will then receive an email from "MYOSH" which is the company contracted by LGIS to host the database. This email will contain a web link, user name and password. For details on how to access the database view the database user guide.
To update contractor insurance details in the database please complete the spreadsheet and email to lgis@lgiswa.com.au
